The Adventurers, Rangers and Scouts Who Fought the Battles of Empire

Straight Shootin’

Craig Rullman is in Rupert, Idaho, taking on the two-day regional Tactical Games event we have been training for over the past several months. TG provided a video overview of the stages.

This is tough stuff.

I could not participate in the event due to work commitments — this is a season of multiple newspaper/special publication deadlines. In order to mitigate FOMO and feeling like a slacker, I put together a right bastard of a workout for Saturday — and named it the Shangani Drill:

200m run

25m Stress Position Bag Carry 100#

50m 24KG Kettlebell Carry — 5 rounds each @ 25/50m

50m 24KG Kettlebell Carry + 10 24KG KB Swivel Press — 10 rounds pistol @ 10m

20xDouble KB Row — 5 rounds rifle from knee @ 50m

50m Sled Drag 100# — 10 rounds pistol @ 15m

10xDouble KB Overhead Press — 5 rounds rifle offhand @ 50m

10×60# Bag Squats — 5 rounds rifle rested on sandbag

I did three rounds. In the interest of maintaining my stockpile of 9mm and 5.56, I decided to run this with the .22s — the CZ452FS and the Smith & Wesson 617.

Rifle targets were clays and steel. Was very pleased with my rifle work. Consistently running 4/5 or 5/5. The revolver work was less satisfying. The stress on the shooting is just harder to manage with the handgun. The bottom target was shot after the workout. The difference is marked.

My friend Mike Biggers and I played a benefit gig on Friday evening for a dear friend, Annie Marland, who has been dealing with a raft of medical issues after she took a bad fall at home. Annie has been following our music for years. One of her favorite songs is my original Breaker Morant.  She loves to sing the chorus, which is taken from Morant’s purported last words to the firing squad of Cameron Highlanders:

Shoot straight, you bastards!

Don’t make a mess of it!

Don’t look away, look me straight in the eye

Shoot straight, you bastards!

You know the truth of it

Scapegoats of Empire and Kitchener’s lies

You can download the song here.

The event raised her spirits considerably — and a generous audience pitched in with a substantial sum that will help her pay for home care while she recovers.

Just a great, heart-warming evening.
