Working The Trapline – An Iconic Rifle; Pirate Shanties; The First Mountain Man

August 14, 2026, by JimC

If you’ve been waiting and wondering when you could get yourself the Canadian Rangers’ TK3 Arctic Rifle, wonder no more. You can get it in the States through Beretta. Cost you $2,259 plews though…

Maybe when we secure that Urca de Lima gold, eh?

Nice segue into the piratical, eh?

The reboot of the Assassins Creed: Black Flag game has kicked up some delightful musical side-effects, including a live set of sea shanties featured in the game, performed in London.

*

If anybody would have appreciated a rifle like that TK3, it would have been John Colter, often described as the First Mountain Man. He served the Corps of Discovery as a hunter, then returned to the mountains to trap, where he engaged in epic solo missions on behalf of Fur Trade entrepreneur Manuel Lisa.

His is an oft-told tale in these parts, but it’s always worthy of another version, and Legends of the Old West Podcast has served up a telling in their usual fine style.

The estimable Nadia Dean, author of A Demand of Blood: The Cherokee War of 1776 just announced that she has delivered video presentation for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian symposium Turtle Island in 1776: The Native World Caught Between Empires. As soon as she posts how to attend, I’ll let you know.

A couple of the guys I serve with are all in on the re-release of Black Flag. It’s fun to be able to discuss chain shot and cutlasses in the run of normal conversation.

      Now THAT is awesome.
I have fun in a professional setting introducing my right-hand person as the quartermaster of our pirate ship. You know everything you need to know about the people you’re dealing with by how they react to that.

After a long time of following this website I’m chiming in. I saw the post on the Tikka Arctic rifle and the link to the Canadian Rangers who use it it and the SMLE No4 MK1. I must say that the Lee Enfield is a fine rifle having own different versions. Currently I have 2 Tikka T3s, they are by far the best of the lower priced rifles on the market. The action is glass smooth and the trigger pull is great out of the box. I have rebarreled both of them.

Welcome to the campfire. An online friend has a Tikka T3X Drover for his “modern frontiersman” rifle and likes it quite a lot.

From my end of the trapline-we visited the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota last week.

Highly recommend a visit-even though I will die on the hill that it is actually a museum and not a “Library.”

Very interactive and immersive and all ages from kindergarten to 80 plus seemed to enjoy it.

Me being me-I was very disappointed with the selection of books in the museum store-I was expecting all the books he wrote and a lot of Rooseveltiana but pretty sparse.

I was looking for one (well more than one) and I was happy that I bought it at another place in town.

This was an interesting podcast off of Meater with Dan Flores et al talking about their favorite books on the west.

I’m concocting a plan to get myself out that way.

Medora’s a great place to visit. Went there a year or two ago.
