That image has fueled many a life-long obsession, including that of musician Phil Collins, who spent a fortune amassing a huge Alamo collection, which he has donated to the State of Texas.
Phil Collins — yes, THAT Phil Collins — is a major collector of Alamo memorabilia and artifacts. Probably THE major collector, as a matter of fact. Like many of us, he was first drawn to the story watching Disney’s “Davy Crockett” as a kid. Now he’s donating a vast collection to the state of Texas. Per the BBC:
Singer Phil Collins has donated his extensive collection of Alamo memorabilia to a Texas museum.
The 63-year-old Genesis star said he had amassed more than 200 artefacts after becoming fascinated with the 1836 battle as a child.
Collins said he was donating the collection — thought to be the largest in private hands — to ensure it was better cared for in the future.
It includes items such as a rifle owned by folk hero Davy Crockett.

I’ve never been a fan — not my kinda music — but he’s a cool guy and that’s a fine thing to do. Collins is also the author of a book “The Alamo & Beyond: A Collector’s Journey,” illustrated by the estimable Gary Zaboly.
