Our friends at Rock Island Auction Co. have another historic firearm up for auction in August: a Colt New Army Model 1903 with factory engraving and special order checkered grips that was owned by General John J. “Blackjack” Pershing.
The revolver is up with an “officer’s machete” that probably dates to Pershing’s service in the Philippines.
The lot is expected to sell for $25,000 to $40,000, so contact your banker.
I like to think Black Jack carried the revolver into Mexico on the 1916 Punitive Expedition against Pancho Villa.

Speaking of Pancho, there’s a reenactor who does a remarkable impression of the legendary MexRev general. He recently posted some photos of an interaction with contemporary Mexican Special Forces:
Continuity & Persistence, amigos.

Viva! I could hear the theme music from “The Professionals” while reading this.
Speaking of fine pistolas and troubles past and present, have you seen the book The 116 yet? It looks like a good followup read to The Unvanquished. It tells the tale of a band of Jayhawker gunslingers that Jim Lane sent to Lincoln during the earliest stages of the war. I had heard of them, but never in great detail. It’s coming up soon on my reading list.

Oh. My. I’m on this like a shot.

All, I am also passing this on to Pershing and Punitive Expedition folks who enjoy the history and a couple of gun aficionados too. I wrote the article about Apache Scouts riding with Pershing. Would have loved a photo of that pistol too. Any chance for a digitized copy?
Thanks, Lynda
