Boomtown & A Receding Horizon

July 10, 2024, by JimC

The Boomtown podcast is all that it’s cracked up to be. Really good stuff. This interview with its creator, Christian Wallace, pleases me. I mean, c’mon, man… he chose his college because the Cheatham Street Warehouse — a legendary hippie-shitkicker honky-tonk was down the street. That’s my kinda people…

The second chapter of Horizon: An American Saga has been bumped from its August 16 release date. That can’t be spun as good news — the movie clearly underperformed at the box office. I mean, Costner got bucked off hard.

But… I think this is a smart play. I suspect that people will discover Chapter 1 on streaming services and that might give the rest of the series a boost.

The caper, per The Hollywood Reporter:

After numerous discussions, Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema made the decision to switch up their ambitious release plan in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience for the first film, which sports a $100 million price tag.

As part of that attempt, Chapter 1 will debut in the home on Premium VOD July 16 in addition to still being available to watch in theaters (the film could do notable business on PVOD).

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max. We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run,” a New Line spokesperson said.

Added Territory Pictures in a separate statement, “The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey. The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride. We welcome the opportunity for that window to be expanded as we know it will only serve to enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2.”

I really do hope this massive undertaking can find an audience on its own terms.

I barely got in to the sit-down thee-ate-her to see “Horizon, Part 1”–they sure didn’t hold it long in my po-dunk town–I’ll post my thoughts here rather than on the July 4th post on the subject….. Frankly, I LOVED it! But then I was “IN” at the mention of “Apaches”! I can agree with some of the negative online critiques, but then they are mostly from modern, urban critics, that just don’t get a movie(series) like this–not so “politically correct” these days, with all the violence and gun play, of course. But I really appreciated the makers from not shying away from the reality of those times. I had no problem with the multitude of characters and various plots in the story line–if nothing else, “Game Of Thrones” weaned me on that kind of film story! I’m all in for “Part 2”, whenever they release it! And I understood this was only the BEGINNING of the whole series, so am not critical about it leaving one hanging(so far…..) The movie kinda reminded me of a more modern version of the 1960’s “How The West Was Won”–which my parents took me to see when I was only 4! I well remember them asking me if I could sit through a 3+ hour movie(or was that unedited theatre version a full 4 hours? I forget), and I did sit through it and loved it all, but especially the Cheyenne attack on the wagon train scene, AND ESPECIALLY the Arapahoes stampeding the buffalo on the train construction site! I was a little savage from the get-go! But Westerns are always risky these days(alas): I found it interesting that ALL of the folks in the theatre when I went to see “Horizon” were old gray hairs like myself–except for one young woman who was only there to take her invalid mother, and she spent most of her time on her cell phone, and actually left the film a coupla times during the showing…,.I hardly realized three hours had passed myself, and am ready to go for Part deux!
