“Caught Off Guard,” by the great David Wright. This painting graces the title page of the brand-new HughGlass.org.
Waugh! That’s some doin’s!
Our compadre Hugh Glass, whose unbelievable survival epic is recounted in “The Revenant,” has his own web site — thanks to the hivernants of the Museum of the Mountain Man.
Visit http://hughglass.org/ for “articles about Hugh Glass early life and mountain man career. The true facts of the grizzly bear mauling and many many sources to back up the account. Articles written by fur trade historians including Clay Landry who was the historical consultant for the film The Revenant.”
Glad I cut sign of this and I’ll trail that way often.

There’s an excellent article about Glass and The Revenant, including an interview with Clay Landry, in the latest issue of American Frontiersman magazine. The issue’s cover is the painting you posted above. Disclosure – I’m an occasional contributor to the magazine.

Thanks for that. The local grocery carries it — I’ll have to grab it. What sorts of stuff have you written for it?
Wayne says
It’s a fairly new periodical that only hits the stands twice a year (winter & summer issues). I’ve provided stories on canoe camping with a mix of old style gear (canvas tents, cots, kerosene lanterns) and modern equipment (dry bags, coolers), fishing with jigs, fishing tackle collectors shows, the federal wilderness system, etc. I’m also writing for their sister publication, The New Pioneer (not to be confused with the Canadian magazine entitled, New Pioneer). It’s a sideline I’ve developed since I’m nearing retirement. Google Harris Publications Wayne Williams and a couple articles should pop up.

I’ve not heard of this magazine. I’ll have to look for it. Hopefully B&N has it.

Yeah, Jim, but have you watched your copy of “Man In The Wilderness” yet?????
JimC says
I have indeed. And it is a fine film.

And thanks, BTW — great to have it in my library.

Glad you liked it! And kinda mandatory for anyone interested in the Hugh Glass story–I think they did a purty good job with it for 1971–although I certainly expect a LOT better from this new film. That’d be an interesting future post–comparing the two!

Agree!
