The Adventurers, Rangers and Scouts Who Fought the Battles of Empire

The Duttons Go To the Mattresses

September 2, 2021, by JimC

My Cowboy Soap Opera (aka Yellowstone) is set to come roaring back right in time for my birthday. Ain’t that nice? I like to celebrate with a little Frontier Partisan mayhem. My Big Five-0 celebration entailed gathering a bunch of friends to feast at a Peruvian restaurant before adjourning to take in Spectre. Yes, Bond is a Frontier Partisan. This is known.

This year, obviously, it will be The-Duttons-Go-To-The-Mattresses.

For some of Clan Cornelius, the best news is that a certain “Walker” played by a certain sad-eyed cowboy singer named Ryan Bingham is back. He narrowly escaped being “taken to the train station” in a previous season, and he’s crosswise with Dutton enforcer Rip Wheeler, which is a bad place to be. Wonder if his luck will hold through S4…

Yellowstone is the flagship of Taylor Sheridan’s creative empire. I’ve been in Sheridan’s corner since Hell or High Water. His sensibilities and mine are muy simpatico. Continuity & Persistence and all that…

I am delighted that he has parlayed his feel for the contemporary frontier tale into unexpected and massive commercial success. Filming for a Yellowstone prequel going by the title Y:1883 is underway, with shots of Sam Elliott in period garb hitting Facebook a couple of days ago. The photographer has a “Do Not Copy” watermark on them, and I’ll honor that, though they’ve been shared far and wide on social media.

If you haven’t partaken of My Cowboy Soap Opera yet, get caught up. It’s a hoot — a fine way to spend a chilly fall evening.

More of a “Trapline” thing but the September 2021 issue of Smithsonian Magazine has a story sure to be of interest here.

“In the Land of the Ancient Ones” is about the first filming allowed by the Navajo in Canyon del Muero which is part of the Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

It is a film about a pioneering archeological couple (true story) that did work in the area circa 1930 and was ahead of their time in employing Navajo.

“The movie, an archaeological epic, tiltled ‘Canyon Del Muerto.’

Ann Axtell Morris and her husband Earl Morris are the subjects of the film.
