Today is the 280th anniversary of the birth of the great Long Hunter. Boone is the prototype for the Frontier Partisan, even though he was a reluctant warrior. His skill as a hunter and his natural presence and charisma put him in leadership roles, and leadership on the Ohio Valley frontier in the days of the American Revolution meant military leadership.
By any reckoning, Boone was a fine man, and his lack of bloodthirstiness in a bloodthirsty time does him credit. Two-hundred-and-eighty years on, he remains a humble yet essential American hero.
