Evan Felker on the Meateater podcast? Yeah, I’m in. Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours wrote two of the best hunting songs ever — The Bird Hunters and The Rut off the most recent album. He does The Bird Hunters in the studio here. Turnpike Troubadours kicked off their set at the FairWell Festival with that song and I got frisson chills like you wouldn’t believe.
Good stuff here. When a bronc rider helps you get sober, well… that’s Western AF.
The Clan will see Turnpike Troubadours this spring, with Cody Jinks and Trampled By Turtles.

The Hawken Rifle was a workhorse of the plains and mountains in the mid-19th Century. But ol’ Jake & Sam could go fancy if it suited the client, as evidenced by this 1836 rifle that belonged to George W. Atchinson, a steamboat captain on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.
That’s got more silver than Mariano Medina’s “Old Lady Hawkens.”

Speaking of Hawkens (and ace songwriters), here’s a nice piece on our friend Hawken Horse.
I realized very quickly that I had discovered a forgotten sector of Americans. These are folks who are dedicated to preserving the history (good and bad) of our country. You’ll find them wandering the halls of a museum or splitting firewood by hand. And by just doing what I loved, I ended up filling a major hole that we didn’t know existed.
Think he’s talkin’ about folks like us…
Lady Marilyn scored us tickets to Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours, Cody Jinx and will likely nail down Jason Isbell and Billy Strings before summer. When she rides in the truck, she asks for Hawken Horse. That oughta tell you something. I you haven’t signed on with his brigade yet, there’s still room for some Enterprising Young Men (even if you ain’t that young anymore).
