Whoa! Yet another must-see film. The life of a bronc peeler for the ages.
FLOATING HORSES: THE LIFE OF CASEY TIBBS documentary film reveals the rags to riches story of rodeo legend and Western movie star, Casey Tibbs. Casey’s flamboyant lifestyle included plush, purple Cadillacs and flashy cowboy attire. Akin to riding a wild bronc in competition, Casey’s unpredictable life had its grand victories and cheerless crashes. Get ready to “Let’er Buck!”

Young, wild and handsome. And troubled. Gotta love that quote about going to AA to save his ass and finding out his ass was connected to his soul. That’s a bit of cowboy poetry right there…
Casey was also a syndicated newspaper columnist, but we shouldn’t hold that against him.
It’s a hell of a story, for sure. Casey Tibbs came up in the hardscrabble years. As Charlie Daniels notes in one of the trailers, if he was on the rodeo scene today, he’d be mega-media, a reality star, bigger than Ty Murray. He’d for sure be on Dancing With the Stars. He was all that, larger than life in every way. Like the song says, like all the great ones, he marched to a different drummer, followed a different star.
Helluva story, and that’s a fact. I’ll bet this one hits Netflix quick, so cinch your saddle nice and snug and settle in for the ride.
Casey the Rainbow rider — there’ll never be another like you, no sir!

It’s interesting to note how celebrities go through the same kind of struggles as rock stars. How many of them ended up in AA?
Craig Rullman says
On of the tougher and more colorful hombres. And endless library of great tales and stories surround the legend. And most of them are true.

A lot of good viewing in the pipeline right now…

Hopefully, it’s a trend.

Great stuff [all] Jim! You have a ” Hat Trick ” already and all high caliber offerings. In my long road days I made more than one stop at 1880 Town in South Dakota and the Casey Tibbs Museum where I spent a lot of time photographing the sculpture of him out back in the chute getting ready. I always ran that way a lot coming from and going to Wisconsin and taking the old roads down through Nebraska or Wyoming. Badlands. Sandhills. Chief Washakie Trail. Independent Rock. Those were the days. Getting paid for an education / vacation. Casey Tibbs and the road goes on…
JimC says
That is wonderful.
Saddle Tramp says
That would be ” Independence ” Rock and the crossing of the trails. Also came by way of Chimney Rock the name that was anglicized from what the Indians called “Elk’s Penis”. We steal from the Indians both ways it seems in puritanical ways as well as unethical, but I digress.

We need a new Western: The Man From Elk Dick.

I hope this brings to life some of the stuff that went on in CA. after his rodeo career! I have heard a lot of stuff through the years and would like to know more. The purple book was kind of Vague!

Ha!!! Excellent Jim!! Maybe a sequel as well Shootout At Elk Dick. I was trying to be anatomically correct as pertains to the “official” explanation with no ambiguity. There is a risk now that all those named Dick out there will be pissed off, however being that it is one of it’s natural functions. Can’t help but pissing somebody off these days. I miss those Wild West roads and the days when a Elk Dick was a Elk Dick. The official entry point for the Mountain Men…
JimC says
Shootout at Elk Dick HAS to happen.

When I was a marketer for a tech company in Colorado Springs I had to write an “about” web page to help our HR folks attract employees. I included the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame with its statue of Casey out front as one of the local attractions. Not sure if it helped lure any Indian software engineers.
JimC says
A worthy act, regardless.

According to Garner Simmons’ book, Peckinpah, Casey Tibbs and Ben Johnson once lived on either side of Jeb Rosebrook who wrote the script for the movie Junior Bonner. Ben Johnson is the only person I can name who was a world champion cowboy (steer roping) and Academy Award winner. I’d love to have listened in on those conversations.

Oh Lord — yes indeed!
