Working The Trapline — Trappers, Angels, Mules & Anzacs

November 11, 2024, by JimC

Ruger is bringing back the full range of classic Marlin lever action rifles — with some cool updates. I have NO need for the new Marlin Trapper in .30-30 with a 16-inch barrel and Skinner peep sights. But that don’t mean I don’t WANT one…

Lioness vibes…

During the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, a group of female soldiers providing medical relief is sent back in to rescue a group of kidnapped boys and girls caught between ISIS and the Taliban.

Eva Green and Rona-Lee Shimon (Fauda). Sure, why not?

I’m posting this for Lady Marilyn, who is fond of mules. As was Kit Carson and Al Sieber.

Some good soul has posted the entire 1985 Aussie miniseries ANZACS. It starts on a cattle station in the Outback as Australia jumps into the Great War on behalf of the old Mother Country, and follows its lads (and a lass) from Gallipoli through the campaigns on the Western Front, where the ANZACS (and the Canadians) became the spearhead of the British Army. Loved this thing back in the day….

*

Brady Crytzer takes on some savage F&I War action in Western Pennsylvania.

*

Here’s another one o’ them run-and-gun events, this one down on the border…

This just popped up on Hulu — NatGeo’s Pirates: Behind the Legends.

I watched Pirates on hulu. If you know a lot about the history of piracy there will be a lot you already know. However it did include some lesser known figures like Grace O’malleye who is referenced in REH’s Swordwoman.

    Great haul of viewing material!

We have very few mules up here in the Northeast, but it is one of my ambitions to try riding one at some point. From what I’ve watched, the mule seems to really excel at the type of rough country off roading we do, this not being the easiest country for cavalry operations.

I once rode one of a friend’s mules 5 miles. I was impressed when we were about to cross a culvert and my mule stopped and refused to go forward. My buddy had me dismount and lead the mule forward. He said the mule could hear water running thru the culvert under his feet and didn’t trust it to be safe. I suspect many of those tales about mules warning their riders of danger are true.

Crytzer’s stuff is great. If you haven’t delved into his current Robinson Run series, you’d likely find it most interesting. It’s a micro-history of a five-mile stretch of creek in western Pennsylvania in the 18th century.

Love that Anzacs series. Watched it all when I got my wisdom teeth out one year. As for Marlins, I wish they’d bring back the long barrel options in 45-70 with the full length mag tube.
