The Adventurers, Rangers and Scouts Who Fought the Battles of Empire

‘There Were No Angels’

October 21, 2023, by JimC

“…He’s portrayed as a very ruthless, brutal, guerrilla tactics leader who killed a lot of people and destroyed a lot of property. From the flip side of that, he was a resistance fighter. He was fighting against being confined to a reservation and the loss of his traditional way of life. And that’s the controversial rub of that kind of history. And both things are true.”

— Kelly Cannon Miller at the Deschutes Historical Society

Frontier Partisans know that my go-to indie book store is Paulina Springs Books here in Sisters, Oregon. I have neglected to measure that the Paulina Springs it’s named for are, in turned, named for a Paiute War Captain named Paulina. Many landmarks in Central and Eastern Oregon are named for the leader who raised hell in the region in the 1860s until he was shot and scalped by rancher and ferry-operater Howard Maupin in 1867. Maupin nailed his scalp to his barn.

The local news channel that my son-in-law works for has done a solid two-parter piece on Paulina, reflecting the classic reality of Frontier Partisan history — who you portray as heroes and villains, patriots and rebels, depend on which side of the fence you stand on.
