T.R. & Skip Headin’ Out. Art by John Seerey-Lester.

John Seerey-Lester paints pictures I want to live in. No surprise, since they are historical hunting scenes that punch right through the bulls-eye of my passions. The painter has a new book out, titled “The Legendary Hunts of Theodore Roosevelt.” I wants it….

I purchased the $60 coffeetable book of his first collection of African hunting scenes and never regretted the price tag; wasn’t in a position to do the same with his second collection. This one… I’ll have to save up my lunch money. T.R. is a hero of mine, and, well… I wants it…

Been communing with the spirit of T.R. quite a bit lately, as I watch the current version of the great man’s Republican Party turn into something that resembles professional wrestling combined with a really weird and toxic reality TV show. I’m sure the old Bull Moose would have plenty to say about it if only he could.

Meanwhile, we can invoke his spirit by viewing this wonderful art.

Wonderful paintings. TR was a Republican I could admire and understand.

Yep. T.R. set up the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on August 18, 1908 (then as the Lake Malheur Reservation).Roosevelt set aside unclaimed government lands encompassed by Malheur, Mud and Harney Lakes “as a preserve and breeding ground for native birds.” Right now, the refuge’s facilities are occupied by radicalized cowboys with ARs. We live in interesting times.

I really hate seeing contemporary political types cherry picking TR’s words for their own gain. By the way, I got to visit the Campfire Club of America this past June and sit by the fire depicted in Seerey-Lester’s painting of TR and the CCA greats gathered together.
