“All you need for happiness is a good gun, a good horse — and a good wife.”
— Daniel Boone
Can’t argue with a Frontier Partisan authority of the stature of Daniel Boone. He was in a position to know, after all, having put Rebecca Boone through the trials and tribulations of separation (Boone put the long in long hunter), multiple moves to wild country, and the loss of two sons to violent encounters with Indians. He well knew that it was she who held it all together…
Lord knows she don’t understand him, but she does the best that she can…
The horse days are behind us now, but the other two legs of that three-legged stool are well in place, for which I am profoundly grateful. Today, Marilyn and I are celebrating our 28th 32nd wedding anniversary. My appreciation for her grows on the daily. She’s the most resilient person I know, wise and funny — and for whatever reason, she “gets” me and my arcane enthusiasms.
By way of illustration, an anecdote:
Someone said somewhere that if your girlfriend or wife will watch Strike Back with you, she’s a keeper. Lo, these many years ago, I brought home the DVD of Season 1 of that juicy chunk of pulpy goodness, and we fired up the first scene, with Michael Stonebridge leading an assault team into a warehouse in Lahore, Pakistan, to rescue a kidnapped John Porter. The suppressed H&K MP5A3s went pew-pew! and Marilyn went:
“What is that? Can we get one? I WANT ONE!”
I know. Bestill my heart.
Seriously, though, to walk with someone through life, to share adventures and Story — as well as the day-to-day, with all of the good times and bad times… that is a rare blessing, and I do not let a day go by without expressing my gratitude to have been so blessed. To quote Jamie Fraser, from another of our favorite Stories:
“Lord, ye gave me a rare woman, and God! I loved her well.”

Congratulations! You should consider yourself lucky. For the last six months, I happen to have gotten a good view of a very dysfunctional marriage. (Thankfully not one I am in. I’m perpetually single.) That can take a its toll. But a good partner is a gift from God.
JimC says
You sure are right about that.

By far the best choice you’ve ever made

You’re in a position to know, having witnessed a range of, shall we say, more dubious choices….
You are right, of course… and thank you.

Just read this post this morning….on the 43rd anniversary of our wedding. Blessed are those who can thrive together, in good times and bad, and extend grace when needed. I cannot imagine not sharing this journey with my husband/partner/friend. May you have at least 28 more years of adventure together!
