The Cougar Question - Frontier Partisans

Got a message from Malcolm Brooks, whose nephew was killed in a mountain lion attack last spring. Tune in to The MeatEater Podcast for this episode. It’s a great podcast and a good platform for discussion of the issue of cougar management — though it also needs to be put in front of a population that has no connection to wild places and wild animals.

This coming Monday (October 7), my brother and Wyatt appear on the MeatEater podcast with host Steven Rinella to discuss the mountain lion attack that occurred last March. This will be the first time either has spoken about the incident publicly, on any media platform. For those not familiar with MeatEater, it’s an outdoors-themed multi-media company focusing as much on the cooking and eating of wild game as on the pursuit of it — with a healthy emphasis on sustainable conservation thrown in as well. The MeatEater has a deep interest in and respect for the frontier history that we all love. I cannot overstate how worthwhile their audiobook MeatEater’s American History: The Long Hunters (1761-1775) is. More than a compendium of hunting adventures, it is a fine treatise on the economics and logistics of the deerskin trade, which was a major driver of the Frontier Partisan history of the Trans-Appalachian Frontier. Really good stuff, and a great way to while a way a few hours. Recommendation: Slap your ear buds in, fire this up and “trek” for a few hours on the stairclimber or the treadmill at the gym.
