The Code

July 15, 2025, by JimC

Mi amigo Craig Rullman is offering framed prints of some of his work in the Buckaroo Country of Oregon and Nevada. Yeah, I have a built-in bias, but I also know the real deal when I see it — and I put Rullman’s work in the same class as masters like Jay Dusard and Kurt Markus. Don’t take my word for it. See for yourself:

The framing is exquisite. These photographs will enhance your lodge or trading post and belong in the collection of any Frontier Partisan. You can DM Craig on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/craig.rullman) to arrange an order. If you are not on Facebook, e-mail me at FrontierPartisan@gmail.com and we’ll get you connected.

I recently ran across a quote from the legendary Ansel Adams that resonates here:

Craig has done this work and lived this life, and that informs the art in ineffable ways. I have a personal favorite that speaks to me on several levels. It’s titled The Code.

Much of this work came out of the time Craig has spent working on his documentary films, The Outside Circle: A Movie of the Modern West, and the forthcoming California Rose, which recounts a saddle-build for the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association. Mike Biggers and I wrote a song titled The California Rose for that film, and we’ll be hosting an evening of Western Music at Paulina Springs Books in Sisters, Oregon, on Saturday, August 16, to help fund studio time to get it recorded. Craig will also have prints available there for sale.

“Logan.”

“Victoria.”

Very nice Black and White photographs… In the current climate where most people want to take old B&W photos and colorize them- there is still artistic space for B&W photos whether new or old…

Craig really loves B&W. There’s a certain gravitas to it.

True. Some people have aversion to B&W. Thus they don’t like B&W pictures. Some don’t like B&W movies and miss the likes of Casablanca. I never really understood that.

Obviously, Craig has the eye and instincts for this kind of work.
