Ray Mears is by far my favorite Bushcraft “star.” And he’s got excellent taste in hats (that’s an Akubra).
I really enjoy the work of Bushcraft practitioner and teacher Ray Mears. No bravado — a low-key yet enthusiastic personality with an obvious passion for the same landscape and history that has tripped my trigger since I was a pup.
What a life Mears has created for himself, practicing and sharing timeless arts that feed the spirit! Hats off to you, sir!
I’ve been remiss in not promoting Mears’ work here before. The films he’s done for BBC are outstanding and readily available on Youtube. A great way to while away a spare hour here and there — way better than watching the news. You’ll come away refreshed, inspired and educated. I know I do.
Here’s a few favorites, starting in my spiritual homeland — Apacheria.
The recently-produced “How the Wild West Was Won” is more travelogue than bush crafting video, but it’s an outstanding exploration of how the landscape of mountain, plains and desert challenged and shaped the westward push of the young United States.

“The Company That Built A Country” explores the wilderness penetrated by the Hudson’s Bay Co. , which, as the title suggests, was central to the creation of Canada.

Have gun, will travel — to remote and beautiful places all over the world. What a life this man created for himself!

Mears’ films seem even better in retrospect when compared to the survival hype on TV today. High quality stuff.

Agree. Too low-key for “reality TV” but much better.
