The Adventurers, Rangers and Scouts Who Fought the Battles of Empire

Of Taboo And Serpents…

February 27, 2016, by JimC

tom hardy taboo fxThe Ranging Companies have returned from the cinematic frontiers with scouting reports.

Craig Rullman scanned the African horizon and spotted this, heading our way in 2017:

An eight-part miniseries starring Tom Hardy, based on his own original story. Set in 1814. James Keziah Delaney, who has gone savage in the wild places of the world and was believed dead in Africa, returns home to claim his father’s shipping empire.

“I have sworn that I will do very, very foolish things… I am a very dangerous man to know.”

On FX — basic cable.

Ummm…. Yeah.

Saddle Tramp plunged into the Amazonian jungle and returned a changed man, reporting a rare and majestic piece of art.

“An Amazonian fever dream down a dark river. All shot in B&W with subtitles. The clash of cultures and time. A good fit for what’s in the air currently. For my money a FP qualified winner. Left more of an impact on me than anything I have seen for quite awhile. My take and my opinion.”

Well…Craig has once again upped the ante for primal treats and this one requires delayed gratification to satiate.
Ahhhh… Tom Hardy. To be honest, for me he played the most compelling character in The Revenant. Afterall it was revenge to his conflicted (or not) conscience that drives the story ahead which is so ably and palpably portrayed by Hardy. The pursuit is what held us in the seat. This one from viewing the trailer will no doubt deliver as well. Nothing like a good mini series to keep you on edge. The year 2017 seems way out there right now. Hope the world holds together until at least after this one hits the screen…
    Calendar has been marked!

If I am in town this Wednesday I hope to see the 45th Anniversary showing of McCABE and MRS MILLER including a Q&A with Robert Altman’s wife along with Keith Carridine and William Devane. Anything with a musical soundtrack by Leonard Cohen is endorsement enough for a film in my humble opinion.
I am sure most if not all know this one. Falls in the frontier somewhere…

Until TABOO arrives gonna need to have something to fill in the void…

    Jim, thanks for posting up.
    Muchas gracias mi amigo!!

I agree with Saddle Tramp. I think that Tom Hardy ends up playing the most compelling character in everything he does, because he is just that good.

And he’s right in another arena too, I’m afeared. 2017 may end up with all of us dressed just like Hardy in this shot, banding together to find meat. Is it wrong if some part of me hopes it does?

I don’t know if it’s wrong in the broader, societal sense — but I can assure you that you are in simpatico company in these parts.

Ahhh, I’ll havta wait for “Taboo” to become a cheapo used DVD, alas–primitive savage that I am with no Cable TV! It DOES look like a good-un. As does “Embrace Of The Serpent”. While you wait for that one, Saddle Tramp, and if you haven’t already, you SHOULD get(should be available cheapo on DVD on Amazon, and “Amazon” being an appropriate name of a place to order these from!) the splendid movies “The Mission”(rather depressing, however, that one) and most especially one of my FAVORITES–“The Emerald Forest”–I actually went to the theatre TWICT to see “The Emerald Forest” when it came out–oh, about 1984 was it? I almost never have done that!…..And Craig Rullman–whaddya mean that we may all end up dressed like that? I already DO(well, at least in the hot jungle Summers where I live!) Except I carry a MUCH BETTER spear, with my Zulu assegai! I do feel far more naked without a spear or a knife than without a loin cloth. Just sayin’…….

Wait a minute…..wait a minute……Tom Hardy? From “The Revenant”, yea, knew that–but I JUST realized he was also Mad Max in the most recent Mad Max movie! I’m kinda SLOW sometimes……

    Well Lane…
I did see THE MISSION but have not seen THE EMERALD FOREST. I just finished watching the entire 4 Part series of CADILLAC DESERT ( inspired by Jim’s initial offering ) in which dams play such a prominent role. All these films mentioned are examples of where religion or empire have run amok; some with and some without purely the best of intentions. I will most definitely check out THE EMERALD FOREST as it is theme appropriate and as so often is the case where Jim, yourself and so many others here at FP have shown both the hazards and the beauty of entering the frontier.
However, the question now remains do we first repair the damage it has wrought, jettison the planet in search of another or Mad Max it?
I am fearful that the sand is now fast approaching the narrow throat of the hour glass…

Speaking of which [ Jim ] your site is becoming so prolific and intriguing with quality posts that it is taking over my discretionary time and I can hardly keep up.
Someone great said that time is what keeps everything from happening at once…
It’s getting blurry though with so much great stuff to take in. There’s something in the air. I can feel it!!! A shake-up or a shakedown. Either way, something is moving.
Gotta head to the real desert and dry out for awhile…
    Get my thirst back!

Well then, Saddle Tramp, I deem it MANDATORY you git you a copy of “The Emerald Forest”!!! Although there are sad, rough parts throughout the film(and it’s just a great, slam-bang jungle adventure movie!), it at least does end positively and with hope for the “invisible people”. Wonderful contrasts illustrated in the film between the urban “civilized” and jungle “primitive” perspectives! Directed by none other than the CLASSIC “Excalibur”‘s John Boorman. I checked on Amazon–it IS available fairly reasonably–WELL WORTH the price, in my opinion–I’d like to hear what you thought if and when you git you a copy!….As for me, won’t be going to no other planet–I’ll be “Mad Maxing” it here on Mother Earth, whatever comes. I’m hoping it’ll be awhile before Ishmael’s predictions come to be. MAYBE, with some of these “primitives” philosophies, we still have time to turn her around……

I think a lot of people are feeling something catastrophic coming. That may account for some of the rage-based craziness of the U.S. election cycle. People know that things are off track, and there is a desperate hope that some kind of “change” will fix it. And there is anxiety based on the sense that maybe it’s beyond fixing.
Personally, don’t believe we can “fix” it. Not to say that it’s not worthwhile to try to make things better when and where you can. But the “correction” will be profound, deep and terrible. So, yes, we — or our near descendants — will be Mad Maxing it. The people of Syria already are Mad Maxing it. It doesn’t take much to push a society over the edge.

    X-Ring Jim …
Our generation has had a long run of a false sense of immunity, but those days may be short lived. God forbid! Many storm the wall but not all make it.

…..and speaking of rumors about upcoming must-see Frontier Partisans possible future projects, I keep looking for one that seems cursed in it’s not getting going, that I hear fleeting rumors about–“Unbound Captives” with none other than “Cora” Madeline Stowe from “Last Of The Mohicans” at the helm as director(she married a Texan and resides in Texas now, apparently, which might explain the interest), and cast were Robert Pattison as a young captive of the Comanches back in the good ole days, and also starring Hugh Jackman–last I heard, both these actors dropped out for various reasons. Although with better media connections, I won’t be surprised at all if you guys know a lot more about it…..
