From the LA Times obits:
Evan S. Connell Jr., a literary iconoclast whose writings as a novelist, poet, essayist and historian won the admiration of critics and a cult-like following of discerning readers with books on subjects as eclectic as Midwestern provincialism, the medieval Crusades and Gen. George Custer’s last stand, has died. He was 88.
The only one of Connell’s books I read was “Son of the Morning Star.” It’s one of the most important books on Custer and the Little Big Horn ever published, and it’s a great read. I don’t agree with all of Connell’s interpretations, but it is on the must-read list for the Frontier Partisans Bookshelf.

Another fine writer passes on, but he lived to be 88, which is pretty darn good!

I have a soft spot for this book, but for the wrong reason. It was made into a pretty good made-for-tv movie, starring Gary Cole as Custer. Gary Cole optioned one of my books for film. The movie never got filmed, but the option money sure came in handy.

pray tell… what book?
John Maddox Roberts says
It was “A Typical American Town,” one of my contemporary PI stories.
