There’s some doin’s planned in the the northeast part of my state this year that are mighty pleasing. From the East Oregonian:
PENDLETON — A new pow wow bringing Indian and cowboy cultures together will take place at the end of February at the Pendleton Convention Center.
The “Two Cultures, One Community Pow Wow” — translated as Nápt Tananáwit, Láxs Níšayčt — marks a collaboration between the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and the city of Pendleton. The inaugural pow wow is Feb. 23-25, bringing potentially thousands of people to the city for the event.
There’s no better place to do something like this than Pendleton, the site of the storied Pendleton Round-Up, where the great Indian Cowboy Jackson Sundown rode into rodeo legend, winning the All-Around in 1916 at the age of 53.
Of course, this makes me think of the Joe Ely song;

Reminds me of a great South American “Frontier Partisans” aficionado story, written by Stan Brock, of the old TV show “Wild Kingdom” fame–before he became a host/participant of that show–he had QUITE the frontier adventures himself, running a ranch in the South American bush, and it’s in his great book “Where All The Cowboys Were Indians”!

This is cool. Was unaware.

Stan Brock was the REAL DEAL(still is, I believe! Helping out with field doctors, even as a senior citizen now, in remote places with his “RAM” program)–a couple of his other books involves the wild pets he kept(a puma, a jaguar, a tapir, etc.!), and more experiences of his life in the South American jungles in “Leemo”(his pet puma) and “More Tales About Leemo”……

Long overdue, and entirely welcomed.

Wow! I love that song. I remember from my Historical Society days that the Native Americans have been honored and remembered at Pendleton for a very long time. Great article.
