It’s as pulpy a trope as ever graced the cover of a “men’s adventure” magazine. Lost Nazi Gold! In a throwback to grand old military pulp adventures like The Dirty Dozen and the wacky but wonderful Kelly’s Heroes, we’re soon going to get Renegades.
The premise is pure pulp. A team of Navy SEALS (it has to be SEALs these days) goes after a horde of hidden Nazi gold in a lake in war torn Bosnia, circa 1995. Starring Sullivan Stapleton, veteran of the glorious pulp-fest Strike Back. Yep. I’ll be in a seat munching popcorn for this one.
Pulpy as it is, the premise has historical foundation. The Nazis (the ultimate pulp villains) are believed to have cached boxes of gold in the deep, dark alpine Lake Toplitz in Austria.
And who knows where else the Nazi’s ill-gotten gold ended up? Lot’s of places in Pulp World…

Did you ever watch the Brit t.v. series PRIVATE SCHUTLZ?

At one point, post war, Schulz gets caught up in a plot to retrieve money from the bottom of an Austrian lake. The money is counterfeit British pound notes, though, not gold.

Not familiar with the series, but there ya go.

Of course, there’s Kelly’s Heroes which is WWII/bank heist movie. The Nazi’s looted most of Europe so it’s not that unrealistic. Part of the plot of Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon deals with gold left behind by the Japanese during WWII.
I’m tempted to wonder if Private Schultz is related to Sgt. Schultz from Hogan’s Heroes. I know nothing!
Yes, it always seems to be about the SEALs. Today, somebody ought to make a movie about a Combat Weatherman.

I haven’t seen a picture like the last one in the article in years. Pictures like that used be used on the cover of pulpy magazines. Looks like an interesting movie even it has SEALs in it!

Right? Total throwback. That’s why that pic jumped out at me.
