Primeval Aesthetic & A Staff Meeting

December 28, 2024, by JimC

American Primeval, which drops on Netflix on January 9, is hearkening back to the visual aesthetic of The Revenant. Which is to say, chilly and bleak. I don’t mean this as a negative — I loved The Revenant as a historical Mountain man fantasy based on the Hugh Glass saga.

Note that Taylor Kitsch’s character Issac bears some resemblance to Tom Hardy’s Fitzpatrick…

To me, Betty Gilpin’s Sarah looks like the archetypal pioneer woman. Like every “good woman” in a Louis L’Amour novel.

I don’t go out afoot without a walking stick. Even when there’s a rifle in hand, there’s a walking stick in the other — a nice piece of hickory. I just like the rhythm of striding out with a stick — but generations of travelers can attest that a walking stick — or better yet a stout staff — makes a helluva good weapon in a pinch.

Tom Langhorne, Frontier Partisans’ favorite Highlander (apologies to Jamie Fraser), is quite the advocate for a Good Stick. He just dropped a nice video with some training exercises…

And here’s some 18th Century self-defense based on French “Great Stick” technique.

I love my carbon fiber trekking poles when I’m hiking and hunting. But they sure wouldn’t deliver as solid a connection or correction as a solid wooden staff!

If I’m not encumbered with a fishing pole or long gun, I don’t go out without a stick either! On long treks I’ll take both, and pack my fly rod.

I’ve had the great fortune to be able to fight sparring opponents with a padded staff in my FMA/fencing ventures. I would take it ahead of all but very long blades or projectile weapons, due to reach, versatility and oomph.

Totally agree — my own sparring showed that bringing a staff to a knife fight is a damn good idea.

Nothin’ like a nice piece of hickory!

I prefer to have a knife on the end of my stick–it’s called a spear!

I have a 2m long Acacia wood ‘staff’, made from the root (which can be bent). Pretty useful for handling a black spitting cobra or to ‘hook’ a sheep or goat taking the wrong direction. Obviously one could also keep an offender at bay if the need should arise.

I am not surprised to see that there are a number of staff-wielders around this campfire.

I once learned that my father’s older sister, who is also our family historian and a DAR member, owned two scalps that had been stolen by our forefathers in Ohio or Pennsylvania. I never saw them in person because she passed away in 1969, and I have no idea what became of them.
