The Adventurers, Rangers and Scouts Who Fought the Battles of Empire

Kit Carson Roundup

January 4, 2021, by JimC

The final episode of The Frontier Partisan Podcast series on Kit Carson is up. You can access it here or through Spotify or Google Podcasts.

In this episode daughter Ceili sat down to interview me on my take on the life and legacy of Kit Carson after having spent months on the trail with the old scout. This was a fun time and might just become a tradition.

I think Carson had a very Scotch-Irish view of take care of your own and to hell with the rest. Which made him not that different from the Indians. He also had sense of duty that might have been at times blind.

I think I see her blinking in Morse Code-“Rescue Me, My Dad is a Nerd.” LOL

Ah, the life of a Frontier Partisans daughter (or son)-I dragged 2 of mine to the Spirit Lake Massacre monument a couple of weeks ago. Just the latest of our little treks.

Plus side, restaurants were open in Iowa (they are not in Minnesota)-so we got to help a small business and enjoy some good hamburgers and cheese balls.

Finally finished listening. I especially enjoyed the Beowulf comment. Which leads me to wonder if we are the first generation(s) broadly speaking without an appreciation of the heroic epic-and I am sorry, but superhero stories don’t cut it. You need a man in the arena getting bloody.

Anyway, another Beowulf thought. Are you familiar with Timothy Murphy? A poet of the Plains. Here is his obituary. He also had a hand in a Beowulf edition.

    https://www.capjournal.com/news/tim-murphy-poet-of-plains-pheasants-and-faith-dies-in-fargo/article_8c3ba964-7dcc-11e8-95f0-af37fd99116b.html

He wrote poems of pheasant hunting and the Missouri Breaks and so forth. However, as the obit noted he was better known in Edinburgh, Scotland than he was in Edinburg, North Dakota.

Odd character. Gay, political conservative, went to Yale-studied under Robert Penn Warren, managed large farms, etc etc.

No, superhero movies do NOT substitute for true heroic epic. Thanks for the lead on Murphy. Sounds like the kind of character I love.

Thank you for putting together the podcasts. I really appreciate all the effort and perspective on Carson’s life. Keeps my mind excited while I’m running a big mind numbing machine in a factory.
