How exactly did a Mountain Man party? Did they just get drunk?

At Rendezvous the drinking was often very heavy — most of the year they didn’t have any alcohol. Feasting on enormous quantities of buffalo meat, smoking and singing was the common party mode.

And you gorge yourself on beaver tails
And elk ribs while you can
        For all the starving times
You thought you’d never eat again
And you drink the trader’s whiskey
That you’ve dreamed of for a year

…and now I need to listen to Pete Kosky again.

I think standing out in the snow tonight would be the more appropriate mountain man activity, but I think my wife is going to insist on going to a cozy pub to watch the Longhorns game.

Happy New Year all! Just got in from the wind and the rain. Walk around the “neighborhood” turned into a walk up Spencer Butte. Funny how that happens; funnier still that I hit Eugene at least twice a year and haven’t climbed it before. No better place to see the last sunset of the year.
