Fletcher Vredenburgh calls Bone Tomahawk “one of the most unsettling horror movies I’ve ever watched.”
Blogger, Robert E. Howard aficionado and Frontier Partisan Fletcher Vredenburgh is trekking out into the Territory on his blog — tackling the venerable genre of the Western. Says Fletcher:
Over the past few years there’ve been a fair number of good or at lest significant Westerns. While often described as revisionist, Andrew Domink’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a very good, almost reverent, invocation of many classic Westerns. Quentin Tarantino’s last two movies, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, were both Westerns, more revisionist than classic by all accounts, but still seemingly respectful (I haven’t seen either one yet, but folks seem to like them). Those other genre-dabblers, the Cohen Brothers, were bold enough to revisit the Charles Portis novel, True Grit. S. Craig Zahler’s 2015 Bone Tomahawk, one of the most unsettling horror movies I’ve ever watched, proves how far a movie can range from one of John Ford’s epics and still without any doubt be called a Western. For genre fans, it’s been a pretty grand time.
Head on over to his blog and check it out. I’m looking forward to it.

The Western used to be dead. Now, it’s making a comeback. I wonder why that is?
JimC says
Cyclical, in part, I think. And the more weird and wild the world becomes, the more people crave the more straightforward problems of the Western. 2 cents. Maybe not worth that.

The Western has never been dead. The Western is America’s mythology, true or false. { America’s identity } Best Black Tyrone.

Respectfully disagree . Simply a failed move to be different. This American genre suffers from this. Vulgar. A paycheck for the actors. John Ford would I hope be with me. too harsh? my opinion Black Tyrone
