This is odd, and I am very pleased about it. Deadline:
Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is set to debut Faraway Downs, the expanded and reimagined cut of his 2008 feature Australia, at the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival…
The project will debut on October 21 down under before hitting Hulu and Disney+ in all other territories on Nov 26. The film’s structure has been expanded to unravel across what has been described as “six chapters.”
Clan Cornelius will most definitely be digging into this, because we are a buncha hopeless romantics with a taste for cattle drives across harsh but beautiful landscapes.

I look forward to this because sometimes longform storytelling helps a director achieve a vision that may have been compromised for theatrical considerations, as well as the inevitable studio executive-dictated changes. It sounds as if Faraway Downs will focus more on the Stolen Generations and the forced removable of Aboriginal children, which is a story many in the West (including myself) were never taught much about in school.
I didn’t hate the original and thought it was well cast, so I will more than willing to give this a shot.

X-ring.
