It has come down in history as “The Wyoming Massacre,” but what happened in a beautiful corner of northeast Pennsylvania on July 3, 1778, was a battle — a fight between American militia forces and Loyalist/Iroquois partisans on a deep-penetration raid to break up Pennsylvania and Jersey settlements and hit at the Continental Army’s source of food supply.
A fight became a retreat and then a rout. Whether it deserves the term “massacre” or not, the Battle of Wyoming was a terrible slaughter, and it had major strategic consequences.
