Last of the Mohicans Coming To TV

April 15, 2019, by JimC

Barry McKnight scouted up this interesting piece of intel: Paramount TV is developing a Last of the Mohicans TV series.

From Deadline:

Written by Cary Joji Fukunaga and Nicholas Osborne and directed by Kassell, The Last of the Mohicans series will be a retelling of Cooper’s French and Indian War novel that re-centers the classic tale on the unlikely romance between Uncas, a young Mohican, and Cora, the mixed-race daughter of a British colonel.

“The clash of civilizations during the Seven Years War, which frames the story of Last of the Mohicans, has been a long-time passion of mine,” said Fukunaga. “It was a world war before the term even existed. The opportunity to recreate the story’s strong-willed and free-thinking characters, with talents including Nick Osborne and Nicole Kassell, is incredibly exciting to me. Together with Paramount TV and Anonymous Content, we have the chance to revive the forgotten ancestors that define American identity today.”

Thematically, it sounds like it will fit nicely with the throughline of Warriors of the Wildlands II — I’d better get cracking so I can catch some marketing wind…

Paramount TV is also the outfit behind my cowboy soap opera, Yellowstone, which released a mayhem-laden trailer for Season 2…

Truly, it is a fine era for Frontier Partisans cinema…

Hopefully it will be better than Hawkeye tv show from the 1990s.

Horses, women, Winchesters and whiskey. Everything you need for a spirited TV series!

Too early for Winchesters. Aside from that… you’re on the money.

OF COURSE I’d be interested in this, but likely havta wait till it comes out(if it ever does) on DVD. Few are old enough to remember the PBS series of “Last Of The Mohicans”–but I am! Must’ve been back in the ’60’s sometime–when I was still in my single digits–I remember my older brother and father watching it, but it was so devoid of action of any sort(if I’m recalling correctly), and mostly filmed in dark, gloomy indoor sets/stages, that it bored me to tears–although I loved the intro of the Indian running through the woods. I’ve since looked for copies of this production, but haven’t found any available. I would assume this new series will be light years ahead of that one. Having been the “GREATEST OF ALL INVISIBLE FILM COUREUR DE BOIS” in the photo of the 1991 film pictured above(I’d be off camera, at the edge of the forest, to the left of this photo), I will, of course, be particularly critical(if I ever do get to see it, that is….)

Fukunaga was a driving force behind True Detective’s first season, so I have no doubt this show will be worth watching.

As for “Yellowstone,” we’re re-watching the first season right now. I was doing a trigger job on the SKS as we did. Felt appropriate.
