Frontier Series Gets A Second Season

October 30, 2016, by JimC

13774835_1679308929058734_367867944_nNetflix has already renewed its fur trade series Frontier for a second season — before the first season has premiered. That would seem to be good news.

From Hollywood Reporter:

Netflix is going back to the Frontier.

The streaming giant has renewed Jason Momoa fur-trading drama Frontier for a second season ahead of its series debut next month, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Produced by Discovery Canada and marking its first original scripted drama, the series is poised to debut Sunday, Nov. 6, at 9 p.m. on Discovery Canada. Netflix will premiere the series in 2017.

The drama is told from multiple perspectives and set in a world where business negotiations are frequently resolved with hatchet fights. Frontier will also explore the delicate relations between Native tribes and Europeans that can spark bloody conflicts.

Momoa, who will return for season two, stars as Declan Harp, an ambitious, confident, charismatic and untamed man with a reputation for being a ruthless trader, driven by lust and revenge. Landon Liboiron, Alun Armstrong, Allan Hawco, Jessica Matten, Shawn Doyle and Zoe Boyle round out the cast.

The drama was created by Peter Blackie and Rob Blackie (Republic of Doyle). Jeff Fierson and Brad Peyton (San Andreas) are on board to exec produce, with the latter set to return to direct the season two premiere. Alex Patrick and John Vatcher (Republic of Doyle) are also set to exec produce. The series is produced by Take the Shot Productions and Peyton and Fierson ASAP Entertainment, in association with Discovery, which will serve as the exclusive Canadian broadcaster, and Netflix.

“As we started to see this cinematic, well-cast and meticulously produced series come to life as we’d dared imagine for season one, we knew we’d created a uniquely immersive world and story that begged for expansion to a second season,” said Ken MacDonald, vp and GM at Discovery Canada. “Our decision to begin filming another six episodes before the series’ world premiere is a testament to our confidence in Frontier’s world-class storytelling.”

Sure hope it is, in fact, world class.

I’ll be watching, of course, come the unspecified date in 2017. I like Momoa, and the fur trade really deserves a badass series. Have to say, though, I’m a little perturbed at the fantasy knife handles. I have never seen a fur trade era knife with antler handles with the tines splaying out every which way. WTF? Is that supposed to indicate that Harp is “untamed”? I’d like to see someone try to skin a deer with all that in the way. I hope it’s not an indication of a bunch of “but it looks cool on TV” BS. I shall withhold judgement for now…

I think the antler handled knives are meant to imply the character is “horny”…

Clearly (a newbie?) someone in costuming was told “antler-handled knives” and took it literally without research…
