The Adventurers, Rangers and Scouts Who Fought the Battles of Empire

On The Trail Of An Eccentric Elephant Hunter

October 27, 2021, by JimC

Took the podcast down a little sidetrail to talk about Johannes Lodewikus Lee, who shot himself a small fortune as an elephant hunter in the kingdom of the Ndebele in the 1860s and ’70s.

The wayward old fellow loved many women — poorly — and sired a big brood of bush-wild children, who lived in a rambling stone castle in the middle of the bush in what’s now Zimbabwe. A more wayward feller you’d be hard-pressed to find, but I have a soft spot for such characters.

Listen to the podcast here.

Johannes Lodewikus Lee. In his day, he was a remarkable character, indeed.

I have a problem with this podcast. It’s too short for such a fascinating character! I have to wonder why he was successful when so many hunters seem not to be.

Look forward to Burnham. I read Splendid Savage before Covid.
