My brother John did not plant the seed for my lifelong obsession with the frontier — I guess I brought that into this world with me. But he sure nurtured the sapling. He took me to my first movie — Jeremiah Johnson. He introduced me to the mighty tales of Robert E. Howard. He gave me his well-read copy of The Frontiersmen, and I literally read the covers off of it.
And… he introduced me to Dune.
I never really connected with Science Fiction as a genre — my preferences in mythic storytelling tended toward Howard and Tolkien and the like. But Dune worked for me. It is, after all, a great, sprawling frontier tale. A remote, rugged inhospitable environment; a conflict over resources; great beasts; an indigenous resistance. Blades….
